NMC warns medical colleges of penalty, admission stoppage for forcing students to stay in hostels

NMC asked all medical colleges to follow PGMER 2023 after receiving complaints from students being forced to pay hefty amounts for hostel stays.

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned medical colleges of monetary penalty, reduction of seats, and stoppage of admissions for forcing students to stay in hostels provided by them. The commission issued the warning after receiving complaints from students.

As per the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023, it will be mandatory for colleges to provide appropriate residential accommodation to postgraduate students. However, it will not be mandatory for the PG students to stay in the hostel, NMC explained. Similarly, there was no such provision in the former PG medical regulations.

Students complained that medical colleges not only compelled them to stay but also charged heavily. “However, number of complaints have been received from PG students alleging that the medical colleges/institutions and hefty amount is being charged on this account. This is a violation of regulation 5.6 of the PGMER, 2023,” NMC said.

The commission directed all the medical colleges and institutions to take cognizance of these regulations and warned of action against them as per the regulations in case they fail to do so. “Hence, all medical colleges and institutes are directed to take cognizance of the above-mentioned regulation, failing which NMC may take action as per regulations 9.1 and 9.2 of the PGMER 2023 which includes monetary penalty, reduction of seats, stoppage of admission etc.,” NMC stated.
