NMC has helped MBBS students who returned during Ukraine-Russia conflict: Govt

Around 18,282 Indian nationals, predominantly medical students were repatriated by the Government of India under the “Operation Ganga” in the wake of the Ukraine Conflict. To help these students, the National Medical Commission (NMC) devised several plans for students, as per their year of programme. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha recently that the Indian students who were in the last year of their undergraduate medicine course and have subsequently completed their studies and granted certificate of completion of course/degree on or before June 30, 2022, have been permitted to appear in Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). Once these students qualify in FMGE, they will have to undergo Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) for a period of two years enabling them for registration.

Additionally, the NMC has conveyed No-objection to the Academic Mobility Program offered by Ukraine i.e. temporary relocation (for the period of conflict) to other universities in different countries (except India). Under this relaxation, the FMGs returning from Ukraine are allowed to avail one time opportunity to complete their remaining medical course. However, the degree will be awarded by the University where they shall migrate. This relaxation period was extended by three months on November 22, 2023. This information was provided by the government in response to a query made by N. K. Premachandran, who is presently a member of Lok Sabha representing Kollam Lok Sabha constituency.
